Embrace the outdoors at Scarborough’s Christmas and New Year events

The temperature might have dropped a few degrees and being on the coast you can expect a few wind swept days if you take a stroll along Scarborough’s bays – but there is something about wrapping up warm, adding a few extra layers and getting outside to breathe in the fresh sea air.

Christmas events worth wrapping up for:

Scarborough Lights 15th November – 22nd December 2024.

Scarborough Lights launched in 2023 as part of the Scarborough Fair year round programme of events in the arts, heritage and sport throughout the town.

This year it’s back and with new additions! Across the 5 weeks visitors can expect a range of free and paid for experiences, from light shows and installations to live performances by talented creators at venues such as St. Mary’s, Scarborough Spa and South Cliff Gardens.

Visit scarboroughfair.uk/lights for the most up-to-date information and how to book.

Scarborough Sparkle 29th November – 1st December.

Get into the festive spirit and make your way through this magical Christmas Winter Wonderland at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre site. Think, food, drink and roasting marshmallows by the pit fires!

Countdown to Christmas with Scarborough’s Live Advent Calendar

Scarborough’s Live Advent Calendar is back!

As part of The Scarborough Fair programme of events, you will see many of Scarborough’s streets and businesses participating in ‘lighting up’ their windows and doors for Scarborough’s Live Advent Calendar.

From 1st – 24th December each evening from 4pm, a different street will be illuminated and remain so until Christmas Day.

Last year our apartments at The Salisbury were proud hosts displaying 173 clay baubles in the reception area window, provided by Mrs Pots’ Pots Pottery Painting and Craft Studio. Each bauble was decorated by the children of Thomas Hinderwell Primary School.

Our window collaboration on Huntriss Row was awarded the “best dressed” window by The Scarborough Fair, who said:

“The time and creativity, coupled with the collaborative effort is the epitome of what the Live Advent Calendar is all about!”

Refresh the senses

After a brisk stroll around Scarborough’s many green spaces, stunning bays, the harbour or one of the seasonal outdoor events, you’ll be ready for a tasty reward.

What’s better than the thought of wrapping your hands around a delicious warm mug of tea, coffee, hot chocolate… or even mulled wine.

One of our favourite spots for a hot beverage is The Harbour Bar, located just opposite Scarborough harbour (of course!). No trip to Scarborough is complete without ordering one of their famous mugs of Horlicks, Bovril or if you can cope with the cold… a scoop of their award-winning ice cream.

If the iconic festive Starbucks Gingerbread Latte is your warm up drink of choice, then fear not. Starbucks is now open on Huntriss Row, next to the entrance of The Salisbury apartments!

Is anything in Scarborough closed during the winter months?

This is often a question we are asked when people are planning their trip to Scarborough during off-peak season. The good news is that most of the town is open for business as usual during the winter months.

Deck chair hire and donkey rides on the South Bay are only operational during May and September – giving the donkeys a well deserved rest.

Some services such as the Central Tramway down to the South Bay will be reduced during the winter months. For full details on timetable information you can visit: https://www.centraltramway.co.uk/opening-times-and-fares
